Interventional Radiology Treatments: Non-Surgical and Effective Solutions
Dear readers, I am Prof. Dr. Aykut Recep Aktaş. My specialism is Interventional Radiology. As one of the most dynamic and innovative branches of modern medicine, interventional radiology is a discipline that provides diagnosis and treatment using minimally invasive methods (with small or no incisions) under image guidance, without making surgical incisions on diseased organs and vessels.
Thanks to advancements in this field, we can offer alternatives to traditional open surgery for the treatment of many diseases, with less pain, shorter recovery times, and lower risks. Our aim is to improve our patients' quality of life and ensure they regain their health in the most comfortable way possible.
What is Interventional Radiology?
Interventional radiology involves radiologists using imaging techniques such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), and angiography to reach problematic areas within the body to perform treatment or diagnostic procedures. This allows doctors to access blood vessels, organs, or other tissues with fine catheters, wires, or needles to treat various diseases. These procedures are typically performed under local anaesthesia or with mild sedation, significantly reducing patients' hospital stays.
Advantages of Interventional Radiology Treatments
- Minimally Invasive: Instead of large surgical incisions, typically only a small incision of a few millimetres or a needle puncture is sufficient.
- Less Pain: Post-procedure pain is generally less compared to surgery.
- Rapid Recovery: Patients can usually return to their normal activities sooner.
- Lower Risk: Risks associated with general anaesthesia and complications from major surgery are reduced.
- Outpatient Treatment Option: Some procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or with a short hospital stay.
Main Interventional Radiology Treatments Offered at Our Antalya Clinic
Varicose Vein Treatment: Painless and Scar-Free Solutions
Varicose veins are a vascular disease resulting from the enlargement, twisting, and loss of function of superficial veins. They can lead to leg pain, a heavy sensation, cramps, and cosmetic concerns. Thanks to modern interventional radiology techniques, we can offer effective non-surgical solutions for varicose vein treatment by accessing the vein from within.
One of the methods used in varicose vein treatment is endovenous glue (cyanoacrylate) application. The widespread use of this method by many practitioners today is well-known. However, in my own clinical practice, I personally choose not to use this method due to some potential complication risks reported in the literature and ongoing studies regarding long-term outcomes. My patients' health and long-term comfort are my priority. For this reason, in our Antalya clinic, we primarily prefer proven, reliable methods with high success rates such as microwave ablation, radiofrequency ablation, or endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), depending on the patient's specific condition. Thanks to these methods, our patients can return to their daily lives quickly and be relieved of their varicose vein complaints.
Other Important Interventional Radiology Treatments
In addition to varicose vein treatment, we successfully perform treatments for many different diseases within my interventional radiology specialism. Some of these include:
- Uterine Fibroid Embolisation: A non-surgical treatment for uterine fibroids (benign tumours in the womb), involving the blocking of blood vessels that supply the fibroids.
- Thyroid Nodule Ablation: The non-surgical reduction of benign thyroid nodules using radiofrequency or microwave energy.
- Liver Cancer Treatments: Methods such as blocking blood vessels that supply liver tumours (chemoembolisation) or ablating the tumour (radiofrequency/microwave ablation).
- Adrenal Tumour Ablation: Ablation of adrenal gland tumours in selected cases.
- Leg Artery Blockages: Angioplasty and stent procedures to restore patency in blocked arteries.
- Fusion Biopsy: For prostate cancer diagnosis, combining MR and ultrasound images to obtain more precise and accurate biopsies.
- Thrombophlebitis and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Treatment: Dissolving or removing blood clots in veins.
- Angiography and Stent Procedures: Diagnosis and treatment for various vascular diseases.
- Aneurysm Treatments: Non-surgical repair of bulges in blood vessels.
